The 1960’s was a decade of change
and many civil rights movements. One of the most notable movements from this
period was the feminist movement. This movement had a large focus in equality
for all women in with reference to men. Women were constantly held at lower
level positions in companies. If a woman had the opportunity to hold a
managerial position at a company, then chances were she was underpaid compared
to males in equivalent positions. The timing of the protest pictured is perfect
when evaluating the 1960’s as a whole. The numerous civil rights movements and
massive change that was happening helped this protest make and impact on its
audience. The photographer was probably working for a newspaper when he took
this candid photo; meaning that the public would see this picture shortly after
it was taken. All of this helps to build the kairotic elements of this text.

The feminist movements of the 1960's were a crucial moment in our nations history. I'm curious to know if during this time period were women concerned with rape culture as they are today? I agree with your interpretation of the kairos of this photo and it's important to acknowledge the impact these protests had on the protests today.
ReplyDeleteThe 1960s was definitely an eventful series of movements, trials, tribulations, and advancements. I slightly want to disagree with the statement about picture representing change, because it only seems as though the first one who is holding the sign is the one with a motive to incite sociopolitical change. Everyone else seems to be relaxing and talking, and it seems that this would be an interesting contrast to the goals of the feminist movement, especially compared to the photographer's intentions. Why would the photographer take a picture with only one woman protesting as opposed to a massive group of women joined together protesting something or boycotting something?
